Slate
Slate countertops have a lot going for them, the subtle, shifting coloration and dark shades of slate offer less variation than marble or granite -- but if dark, dramatic and natural is what you are after, then slate fits the bill. Slight irregularities add to the uniqueness and natural appearance of slate worktops. As well as black, you can also get shades of charcoal, grey, pewter, brown and even some with highlights of green, blue or red.
While the difference in slate slabs is not as distinct as you find in granite or marble, each countertop is still unique.
Slate is easy to clean, doesn’t harbour bacteria and won’t get stained by juice, tomato products, oil, or cleaning products. It stands up very well to heat -- so hot pans are not an issue. Finally, slate countertops are generally more affordable than granite or marble.
